Pistons Pushing Power

“Behind me is infinite power. Before me is endless possibility, around me is boundless opportunity. My strength is mental, physical and spiritual.” - 50 Cent

It's time to shine a brighter light on the Detroit Pistons this year, so fans can take them off their NBA hit list. We understand in the 2023 - 2024 season, there was inconsistency in performance alongside various organizational restructures (naturally), but do the doubtful perceptions have to carry over into this new season? Is it fair for players like Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren to walk around with the paranoia of perfection? For us, we say, they aren't defined by their past.

The team is more than just the stats. When we look at the Detroit Pistons, we see a group of talented guys that have impact on and off of the court. And this summer they have established a revised team and new coaching staff that adds to the off-court success.

Let’s get to know a few of them.

Tim Hardaway Jr.

Tim Hardaway Jr. transitioned to the Detroit Pistons for the 2024-2025 NBA season following a trade from the Dallas Mavericks. With the Pistons, Hardaway has had the opportunity to recalibrate his game as part of a team in rebuilding mode. While his specific stats for his current Detroit tenure are still emerging, his previous experience in Dallas highlights his capacity for instant offense and high-volume shooting.

From Dallas to Detroit, off the court Tim is consistently known for his giving spirit, embracing community, and being an defining example of brotherhood in the NBA. Tim is no stranger to this team. Last season he became a mentor to Cade Cunnigham in his decision to have season ending surgery on his shin.

“He ( THJ ) was actually the guy who made me feel most at ease about it,” said Cunningham of Hardaway in an interview with The Athletic. “He was the last guy I talked to about it. He had the best experience with it. I went to the same doctor as him.” “He is kind of the guy who, after I talked to him, I was like, ‘I’m going to do it’ and felt good about it.”

THJ actively supports Kyle Kuzma in his charitable efforts through the Kuzma Family Foundation, and in the past has supported The Michael Finley Foundation which gives back to children in Dallas.

Tim is a perfect example of a team that does not define one's ability to be a resource for other players and to develop true community and brotherhood.

Malik Beasley

Another powerful player is Malik Beasley. Malik has made an impactful start with the Detroit Pistons during the 2024-25 season. His offensive output has been consistent, often serving as a reliable scoring option off the bench. Beasley’s role as a secondary scorer has bolstered the Pistons’ offense, particularly with his ability to hit high-volume three-point shots.

However, Malik has recently joined the likes of Jared McCain and Javele McGee who have built up a platform as Youtubers to show us their lives in a more personalized way.

This trend of NBA players diversifying their connection with the fans has been happening long before Netflix’s Starting 5 decided to go into production. In the first few moments of Episode 2 on Malik’s channel, we see him spending time with his family by taking them to a pumpkin patch at Three Cedar Farm. As you continue watching you get the feeling that basketball is a second priority to Malik, and what truly comes first is his family. We see this cemented as we watch Malik enjoy lunch with his kids. As his son Makai calls for his attention, Malik playfully turns to him and they proceed with their own signature handshake, ending it with a kiss up to God and a laugh.

Jaden Ivey

And then theres Jaden Ivey, whose ability to impact games through scoring and playmaking has been crucial for the Pistons’ rebuilding efforts. Ivey has also displayed versatility with consistent contributions on both ends of the court. While his shooting from the three-point range is still developing, his ability to attack the rim and create opportunities for teammates remains a strong suit.

What is most commendable about Jaden is his faith and willingness to openly profess his Christian beliefs.

Following the team’s victory against the Brooklyn Nets last season, Jaden expressed openly his faith by stating, “I give all the glory to my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for giving me these gifts,” Ivey said. “I sow the seed every day and just continue to trust God to grow my game.”

From Tim Hardaway Jr. being a representation of brotherhood to Malik Beasley being a reminder to prioritize family in the midst of a busy industry to Jaden Ivey pursuing his faith, they remind us, as sports fans, to humanize these athletes. They are just as impactful off the court as they are on it. In a world where athletes are often reduced to their on-court performances or brand endorsements, it's easy to forget that they are individuals with their own values, struggles, and aspirations. These athletes show us that their legacy extends far beyond the game, offering us lessons on strength, resilience, and the importance of staying true to one's principles.
